Musk Admits He “Went Too Far” in Trump Jibes

Elon Musk has publicly expressed regret for his recent social media attacks on former President Donald Trump, admitting that he “went too far.” In an uncharacteristically conciliatory post on X (formerly Twitter) on June 11, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO wrote, “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far,” acknowledging that a few of his comments had crossed a line. The volte-face comes after a week of sharp criticism from Musk, including calling Trump’s proposed tax and spending bill—a sweeping piece of legislation dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”—a “disgusting abomination.” He even resurfaced years-old comments from Trump and GOP lawmakers warning about government debt. Musk went further, suggesting Trump might be implicated in unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, though he later deleted that post.

Their feud quickly became public. Trump, who once relied on Musk as an informal advisor and funder, responded to Musk’s sharp turn with threats to rescind federal contracts for Tesla and SpaceX. Tesla’s stock dropped roughly 15% during the height of the conflict—Musk temporarily lost tens of billions in net worth—before recovering as tensions cooled. Morgan Stanley analysts had speculated Musk’s attacks were part of a calculated strategy, especially amid his upcoming xAI and Tesla Robotaxi milestones. But Musk’s apology suggests otherwise: this salvo seems more impulsive than tactical. Indeed, markets responded swiftly to Musk’s “blink.” Tesla shares climbed about 2‑2.4% on Robinhood and European exchanges following the apology. Analysts now wonder what comes next: will Trump continue to threaten contract cancellations, or does the public contrition signal a thawing in their fractured relationship?

Trump, after initially vowing not to speak to Musk again, hinted at reconciliation, saying at a press briefing, “I wish him well. We had a good relationship”. But House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans have urged both figures to move past the feud for the sake of national unity. Musk’s brief stint in government, as co-head of the Department for Government Efficiency during Trump’s administration, ended amid friction over policy, particularly when Musk strongly opposed the Republican bill on fiscal grounds. His public withdrawal, coupled with calls for Trump’s impeachment, marked a stark transformation from supporter to critic, and his latest apology marks yet another shift.

Still, the issue of whether this “regret” will soften political fallout remains open. Trump has warned of “very serious consequences” if Musk flips to backing Democrat-aligned initiatives or primary challengers. Meanwhile, Musk presses ahead with major corporate goals—including the June 22 rollout of Tesla’s robotaxi and the continued expansion of xAI—suggesting he’s keen to move on.
