The Niger Delta in Nigeria is one of the most polluted areas on earth - due to repeated oil spills. Environmentalists, scientists and lawyers are working together to restore the damage and seek justice for local residents. For decades, British multinational Shell extracted oil in Nigeria, often with no regard for environmental standards. Oil spills occurred time and again, almost destroying the mangrove forests. Mangroves are essential for ocean biodiversity, and for slowing climate change and are therefore key to the survival of the local population. Now biologists are planting new mangroves, offering fresh hope.
