Kendall Jenner’s new mountain retreat, a "semi-experimental" project captured in the Architectural Digest Open Door series, reveals a bold aesthetic she calls "grandma chic," defined by an "explosion of patterns and fabrics and textures". Working with designer Heidi Kier, whom Jenner admits she tends to "micromanage", the model aimed to "test my limits" in a location where she felt there were "no rules when designing". Jenner emphasized that she built this house "more for my friends than I did for myself," intending it to be a fun, peaceful sanctuary defined by "really good vibes".
The living room, deemed the "most communal room in the house," features an "extremely big and extremely comfy cozy" couch. Jenner personally "sit tested" the couch and chose a "chintz fabric" that she found "really bold and beautiful," fulfilling her "dream and vision" of an "exotic kind of crazy couch that becomes the statement in the room". The couch has already been filled with friends, a moment that made Jenner "really happy" and validated her long-held excitement about ground-up builds—specifically, envisioning "moments with friends" and the "laughs and talks" they would share in the space. Near the living area is a rare Gibson piano, found by a friend and signed by Les Paul. Though Jenner "regrettably" does not play, she felt the red piano "fit so perfectly in this house," and friends have ensured it "gets some good use".
The kitchen, which is open to the family room, was designed for optimal light. The architect and designer had the "genius idea" of installing a skylight, which Jenner appreciates because the area "snows" half the year, allowing the trees to show through beautifully and creating "nice light". Although she considered using bold colors like yellow, Jenner settled on a more neutral scheme, allowing the color to appear in the floors, the range, and charming details like the "little curtains at the bottom of the sink". The kitchen also features a cozy fireplace, an element inspired by a house Jenner visited with her mother, adding to the "cozy vibes" suitable for a cold mountain location.

Jenner maintained the communal focus in the dining room, where she insisted on a "big table" as the "only communal place for everyone to sit and eat". The room features an oversized banquette and "gets a lot of action," hosting dinners, and even where Jenner conducts "therapy". Designed to feel "a bit like a sunroom," the space benefits from light beautifully trickling in, often flickered by the aspen trees outside.
Unique elements throughout the home underscore the intentional, playful design. Jenner called the bar "the most important room in the house". For the art, she participated in "one of the biggest western auctions," spending time "bidding online and finding a couple pieces for the house," a process she found "so addicting" and enjoyable because she felt she was "putting intention into the house". The primary bedroom, with its reclaimed beams and paneling on the ceiling, is a cozy retreat where Jenner loves to wake up, achieved the goal of a room where one "want[s] to read a million books". Her main bathroom, perhaps her favorite space in the house, features vaulted ceilings and burgundy accents, and she praised the checkered pattern, inspired by the kitchen floors, calling the shower "literally perfect". The home also includes an adult bunk bedroom, designed for friends and family, with each bunk featuring a different fabric. Jenner successfully advocated for a custom red ladder in this room after "begging for red at some point in the house and kept getting shut down".
Finally, the property includes a renovated Bambi Airstream, a birthday gift Jenner brought years later to "gut it and renovate it". It was fixed to the ground with real plumbing, electricity, and AC, and now acts as a "third guest room" complete with a "cute little shower bath moment," which Jenner thinks is "so cozy". The house, which looks "really simple and really clean" on the outside, "feels really exciting" once inside, embodying the theme of color and fun.
